A look at the Biggest Telescopes in the World

The Telescope turns 400 years old this year and in four century  period astronomers and telescope makers have been continually making larger and larger telescopes in order to peer deeper and deeper into the mysteries of the universe. There are currently quite a few enormous instruments in use and there are several next generation telescopes being developed that will dwarf anything currently in use. This article takes a look at some of these magnificent monsters of astronomy.

Facts About Rough Diamonds

Before the late 1800s diamonds were found in riverbeds and traded to noblemen who recognize the value of this hard crystal and utilized the diamonds for armor studding in their breast plates.  Later on kings and queens used the rough diamonds to adorn their crowns, tiaras and other jewelry.  They were not as beautiful as polish stones however, they were still prized for their beauty and uniqueness.

Rough diamonds are still in their natural form and have not been cut or polished.  Natural diamonds are found in Octhahedra, Cubic, Macle, and Dodecahedron crystal shapes.  Unless you have done some research into what rough diamonds look like it unlikely you would be able to spot a diamond in its natural setting.

How Are Diamonds Made

When one of the tectonic plates was pushed under another the bodies of the microorganism, now carbon, is also buried under tons of rock.  The carbon is subject to extreme pressures by the rock pressing down upon it and by extreme heat, which is usually between 1100, and 1400 degrees Celsius.  If the carbon being acted upon is pure then the diamond will be colorless which is normal for diamonds.  If nitrogen or sulfur is also included in the carbon then some color may be added to the diamond.

Diamonds And The Computer Industry

Companies like the Gemesis, Apollo Diamond and others are producing quality diamonds and yet the price of the man-made or cultured diamonds are only about 15 percent less than mined diamonds.  Gemesis and Apollo Diamond companies are using diamond jewelry business to finance their entry into the semiconductor industry, which is where the real money is.

The first wave of gem-quality manufactured diamonds hit the market late in 2003.  Man-made diamonds is nothing new and the technology has been available since the mid 19th century.  Small diamond crystals were created for industrial purposes such as grinding wheels, drill bits and saw blades.  What is new is that a Florida based company can now produce rough 3-carat gem-quality diamonds 24 hours a day, seven days a week, at a cost of less than $100 dollars.

Facts About Champagne Diamonds

Since Argyle Diamond Mine was officially opened in 1985 it has produced over 600 million carats of diamonds.  By volume this mine is the largest producing diamond mine in the world but only about 5 percent of the stones produced are considered gem-quality.  Other diamond mines usually have about 20 percent considered gem-quality.

Champagne Diamond

The majority of the Champagne color diamonds are found in the Ragged Ranges in the Kimberley region of Australia.  In this remote corner of north west Australia is the largest diamond mine in the world the called Argyle Diamond Mine.  Diamonds were discovered here in October of 1979.

Facts About Black Diamonds

Approximately 600 tons of conventional diamonds have been mined, traded, polished since 1900. But not a single black diamond has been discovered in the world’s mining fields.  The geological settings where diamonds are found or mined are virtually identical with the one exception, the Black Diamond.

Black diamonds are also called carbonados diamonds.  The Portuguese in Brazil coined the term carbonados in the mid-18th century.  It derived from its visual similarity to porous charcoal. Black diamonds are found only in Brazil and the Central African Republic.
