Improving Your Search Engine Position


Increasing your search engine position is vital to your home based online business. Using PPC ads will bring you immediate results, especially for a new website. Getting a position in the search engines does take time and effort on your part.

But the truth is that over 80% of people searching for your goods or services will find websites through the search engines. Google, Yahoo and MSN are the big three in that order. And, another truth is that people seem to have more trust in sites they have found through a search rather than clicking on an ad. The higher your page appears in the search results, the more traffic you are likely to see, and the more targeted those visitors will be.

There are two types of search engine optimization, on page and off page. They both have their place, and the place to begin is with each page of your website as it is being created. Each page should be optimized. That is just basic, and not really that difficult.

On page search engine optimization

Notice the title bar as you are surfing other sites. The title bar is the colored bar at the top of the page. Notice what it says. When your pages appear on the internet, your main keywords should appear in the title bar. This will indicate to search engines what your webpage is all about. Your keywords should be included in your file names or the title of your pages. Homepage is not a good name for the main page of your website. It tells the visitor little except that this is your opening page. Give it a name including your main keyword or keyword phrase.

As you click through the pages on your site, the pages names should reflect your main keyword. Try to keep your titles short and to the point and don’t repeat keywords.

Check the content of each of your pages and make sure the content is centered around your main keyword. Now, more than ever before, search engines are rating sites based on content. Sprinkle your keyword throughout your copy in a natural way, and embellish your copy with related keywords, but don’t overdo it.

Make your goal to supply what your visitors will come to your site and expect to find, and try to have at least 300 words on a page. This can be somewhat difficult on product pages, but try to add as much text content as you can both to inform visitors and to please search engines.

Link your pages together within the content wherever it makes sense. If you can work a link into your content that refers to another page on your site this will help with your backlinks.

Many people make little of meta tags these days, but it can’t hurt to have them. Try to make them meaningful in relation to the page. Often the search engines will show the meta tags when they display your url in a search page. If nothing else, what you put in the meta tag may interest those searching and make them click on your link rather than the one above or below yours.

Off page search engine optimization

The on page optimization just covered is basic good sense and will help when spiders visit your site, but the real clout comes from off page optimization.

Getting backlinks is the backbone of off page optimization, and vital to good search engine positioning.

This is where the real work begins. Exchanging links with other webmasters, especially those with related sites is a good way to begin. It is not that easy, but if you can exchange articles with another webmaster that are embedded with links back to your site, within the copy, this is one of the best ways. The old practice of just putting up link pages with short blurbs describing the site is losing credibility with the search engines.

Writing articles and submitting them to article banks is one of the very best ways to get links. This will bring you some traffic directly from the articles, and best of all, it will give you one way back links and favor with the search engines.

The other top method of getting backlinks at this time, is social bookmarking. If you know little about it, do a search and start studying up on the subject. Once you get started, just use common sense and don’t overdo a good thing.

Submitting to directories is still of value, and most of them are free to submit to. Do a little research on anchor text. The anchor text you use will be of vital importance to how the search engines rate the links.
