There are many tactics that can be used to maximize not only the number of clicks, but also their value. If you go to the Google Keyword Tool External, and opt for the Cost of Ad Position Estimates option, you will find the estimated cost per click for the top positions for each advert keyword on the first page of Google. If you can design a page around the highest costing keywords, you will likely make more money than from the lower costing alternatives.
The position of your Adsense blocks on the page is also crucial. Certain page positions are more lucrative than others, since these are the positions that the human eye tends to glance at first. These positions can be found by checking out any of the web page ‘heat maps’ that can be found online.
The color of the adverts is also important. The webmaster is allowed to change all of the advert color elements, including the title, text, URL, background and frame line color. Ads that blend into the background of the page generally do best, and the less they look like ads, the better they seem to perform. Thus, a line of text ads across the top of the page colored in blue can be made to look like site navigation and attract a few unwitting clicks.

By using that type of web page analysis, you can place your blocks in the best performing positions on your page, and in the best colors. You can even find out which of your web pages perform best.
