Steps To Effective Email Marketing

Certainly everyone has heard of email marketing. It is now one of the most prevalent ways to engage your customers and enlighten them on what you have going on in your business. Specifically, it is a targeted plan whereby you can exercise your ability to convey to the customer how you can help solve their specific problem with the method most effective for them. However, it pays to, from time to time rehash or reinforce the steps necessary to create and implement a plan for effective email marketing. So, I’ve listed several of what I consider to be topics of utmost importance when your goal is to operate an effective email marketing plan.

First, make sure that all correspondence that you send out to your clients contains proper punctuation, spelling and grammar. The reason for this is simple: to convey the professionalism and competency of your business. Incorrect spelling and the misuse of various words implies at the very least that your business is unlearned, potentially error-filled and perhaps even unscrupulous. Most importantly, this can eliminate the likelihood of your business’s goal of building trust with the client.

Next, consider reducing the line length in the email correspondence that you send out to 65-70 characters per line. Why you ask? Because, human beings attention spans are short, even shorter in today’s information society (there’s a whole lot of info to weed through these days). As such, it is imperative that you keep your client’s attention and you can do this by structuring your emails to conform to this line length. Studies have shown that short line lengths and paragraphs keep a reader’s attention longer. This reduction in line length will allow you to create emails that are easy to read, comprehend and most of all will allow you to maintain your customer’s attention.

Finally, although I know one of the best things about operating your own business is the freedom to express yourself and to announce to the world your message, always remember a large segment of your audience is most likely quite conservative. As such, I always advise against using racy language or anything with sexual innuendos. Additionally, profanity in any form is generally detrimental to the perception of your business. Following these steps can help you continue to operate an effective email marketing plan.
