Microsoft Dynamics GP add-ons are often written in Great Plains Dexterity ? with new and sometimes alternative GP forms and windows where the buttons, have scripts and forms themselves have procedures and functions.
These programming parts are written in Dex Sanscript programming language. Sanscript is sort of proprietary scripting language, typically you can get Dex programmer from GP ISV and customization partners, you should check with your Great Plains VAR for details. When newer Dynamics GP version is released, if you plan to update to it, you have to take into consideration Dex modification upgrade requirement. Microsoft Dexterity or former name is Great Plains Dexterity is Integrated Development Environment and programming language (Sanscript). Current version of Microsoft Dynamics GP is 10.0 and software programmers have broader number of customization tools: eConnect, SQL scripting, Visual Studio SDK, Modifier with VBA.
However if you look at earlier versions: 5.0, 6.0, 7.5 then you will discover that large number of existing Great Plains ERP installations have modifications programmed in GP Dexterity. Dex is still all-mighty and extremely powerful tool ? you will see Dexterity foundation in GP tables, forms, atomic stored procedures (deployed by Dex table indexes). Microsoft Dynamics GP, or also commonly known as Great Plains is Microsoft SQL Server database application and at the same time it has its own IDE and programming language, known as Great Plains Dexterity.
Dexterity in turn is written on C as a shell. Recent versions, such as 10.0, 9.0 are tightly integrated with Microsoft Outlook, plus version 10.0 has integration with Sharepoint and SQL Server Reporting Services (or SRS). Having said that, however we would like to inform you that installation itself is streamlined and not overly difficult. Let’s review:
